Tawa-tawa Plant: An alternative Medicine for Dengue Fever

Recently, Philippines has been hit by a big problem in terms of health. It was recently reported that Dengue fever spread throughout the country. Dengue fever is a virus disease that is transmitted through mosquito. Most of the people that strikes this kind of disease are those who have low immune system.  A certain person can strike dengue four times. 

People now are doing an alternative way to cure dengue fever. One of the most popular alternative is by boiling a  tawa-tawa palant.  Tawa- tawa is a Slender-stemmed, annual hairy plant with many branches from the base to the top, spreading up to 40 cms tall, reddish or purplish in color. Leaves are opposite, elliptic-oblong to oblong-lanceolate, distichoous, 1 to 2.5 cms long, blotched with purple in the middle, toothed at the edge. Numerous involucres, purplish to greenish in color, dense, axillary, short-stalked clusters or crowded cymes, about 1 mm in length. Capsules are broadly ovoid, hairy, and three-angled, about 1.5 cms. 

There are many testimonies stated that the plants really cures dengue fever. In order to use the tawa-tawa plants you must drink the water of the boiled roots.
How to prepare decoction of tawa-tawa:
  • Cut the roots of 5 or 6 tawa-tawa plants.
  • Rinse and clean the roots.
  • Boil water and put the tawa-tawa roots for 1 minute.
  • Cool the decoction.
  • Drink 1 or 1 ½ glasses every hour for 24 hours.


The said plant is not yet verified to effectively cure dengue fever. People use tawa-tawa plants, in order to lessen the expenses for the treatment of the disease. Just make sure to prepare it properly.

    actually tawa2 cant cure the disease coz its viral- self limiting. but tawa2 is used to increase the platelet count of the patient. increase platelet means less or no bleeding at all. (geek me! :D)
